## Quick Fixes to Try First

Many appliance problems come down to a clogged filter, a blocked vent, a tripped switch or a supply that’s been turned off. Run through the checks below for your appliance — they’re safe to do yourself and can save you a service call. If the issue remains, note what you found; it helps our technician diagnose faster.

### Refrigerator Not Cooling

If the fridge runs but stays warm, first vacuum the condenser coils and confirm the vents inside aren’t blocked by food. Set it to a colder setting and give it a few hours. If it still won’t cool, the start relay, condenser fan or sealed system likely needs service.

### Freezer Frosting Up

Heavy frost usually means a defrost problem — a failed defrost heater, thermostat or timer. Check that the door seals fully and nothing holds it ajar. Persistent frost after checking the seal needs a technician.

### Washer Won’t Drain or Spin

Clothes left soaking often trace to a clogged drain pump filter, a kinked drain hose, or a broken lid/door switch. Clean the filter (bottom front on many models) and confirm the door latches. If it still won’t spin, the pump or lid switch may have failed.

### Dryer Won’t Heat / Long Dry Times

No heat is commonly a blown thermal fuse, failed heating element or (on gas) a bad igniter. Long dry times are almost always a clogged vent — clean the lint trap and the exterior vent. Long runs that stay clogged are a fire risk; have the vent and dryer checked.

### Dishwasher Not Cleaning or Draining

Spotty dishes point to worn spray arms, a weak wash pump or hard-water scale; standing water points to a clogged filter or drain hose. Clean the bottom filter and spray-arm jets first. If problems remain, the pump or valve may need service.

### Oven Not Heating / Uneven

On electric ovens a failed bake/broil element is most common; on gas, the igniter. Uneven baking is usually a drifting temperature sensor. Test with an oven thermometer — a steady 25–50° offset means the sensor or calibration.

### Gas Burner Won’t Light

Clicking with no flame is usually a dirty or wet burner cap, a clogged port, or a failed igniter. Make sure caps are dry and seated after cleaning. If it still won’t spark safely, stop and call — don’t force a gas burner.

### Ice Maker Not Working

No ice often means the water supply is off, the filter is overdue, or the inlet valve/fill tube is frozen or failed. Confirm the supply valve is open and replace an old filter. Continued failure needs the valve or module checked.

## When to Troubleshoot Yourself — and When to Call

Safe DIY checks include cleaning condenser coils, lint traps and dishwasher filters, confirming the appliance has power and water, resetting after a power outage, and inspecting door seals. These fix a surprising share of “broken” appliances and cost nothing but a few minutes.

Leave the rest to a professional. Refrigerant sealed-system work, gas components, and internal electrical repairs are not DIY jobs — they carry real safety risks and usually require specialized tools and licensing. If you smell gas, do not operate the appliance or any electrical switch: ventilate the area and contact your gas utility first.

⚠️ Safety first: never bypass a safety switch, run a dryer with a clogged vent, or attempt refrigerant or gas repairs yourself. When in doubt, call a experienced technician.

## Troubleshooting in Depth, by Appliance

### Refrigerators & Freezers

A refrigerator that won’t cool is the most time-sensitive appliance failure because of food safety. Beyond dirty condenser coils, common causes are a failed evaporator fan (you’ll often hear silence where a fan should hum), a stuck defrost system icing over the coils, or a start relay that won’t kick the compressor on. Built-in and Sub-Zero units use dual refrigeration, so one compartment can fail while the other works normally — that points to a specific system rather than the whole unit.

### Washers & Dryers

Washers that won’t drain almost always have a clogged pump filter or a foreign object (a coin or sock) stuck in the pump. Front-loaders that “walk” have worn shock absorbers or an unbalanced load. For dryers, the single biggest issue is airflow: a clogged lint trap or vent makes the dryer run hot, shut off early and take multiple cycles — and it’s a leading cause of house fires, so vent cleaning matters as much as the repair itself.

### Dishwashers

Dishes coming out dirty usually means the spray arms are clogged or not spinning, the wash pump is weak, or hard water has scaled up the jets — common on Long Island well water. Standing water at the bottom points to a blocked filter, drain hose or air gap. Cleaning the filter and spray-arm nozzles is a safe first step that often restores performance.

### Ovens, Stoves & Cooktops

An oven that won’t heat comes down to the bake element (electric) or igniter (gas). Uneven baking is a temperature-sensor or calibration issue you can confirm with an oven thermometer. Gas burners that click without lighting usually just need the cap cleaned, dried and reseated — but if a burner still won’t light or you smell gas, stop and call a professional.

## Troubleshooting FAQ

### Is it safe to troubleshoot my own appliance?

Basic checks — cleaning filters and vents, confirming power and water supply, checking door seals — are safe. But do not attempt gas, sealed-system (refrigerant) or internal electrical repairs; those require a licensed technician for safety.

### My fridge isn’t cooling — how urgent is it?

Very. A warm refrigerator can spoil hundreds of dollars of food within hours. Try the quick checks above, then call early in the day for same-day service across Queens and Long Island.

### Why does my dryer take multiple cycles to dry?

Almost always restricted airflow from a clogged lint trap or vent. Clean both; if dry times stay long, the vent run may be blocked further along, which is also a fire hazard worth inspecting.

### When should I repair vs. replace an appliance?

As a rule of thumb, repair if the unit is well within its expected lifespan and the fix costs less than about half of a replacement — especially for premium brands like Sub-Zero, Viking and Miele, which are built to last. We give an honest recommendation after diagnosis.

### Do you charge for a diagnosis?

We provide a flat-rate quote before any work begins, and the diagnostic fee is applied toward the repair when you go ahead. No surprise charges.

### Which areas do you serve?

Same-day appliance repair across Queens, Nassau County, Suffolk County (Long Island) and Brooklyn, including all major and premium brands.
